In the first portion of the show, guests view a film where they meet the star of the show, Ellen DeGeneres.
After a short monologue, Ellen tells the story of how she fell asleep in her apartment watching her favorite
television program, Jeopardy!, and had a dream that she was on the show. The only problem is that all of the
categories were on a subject she knows nothing about: energy. And to make matters worse, Ellen faces off
against her brainy ex-college roommate, Judy Peterson (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), and Albert Einstein
(played by Tim Conway).
After an embarrassing first round, Ellen freezes her dream and realizes that
something must be done if she expects to win the game. At that moment, Bill Nye the Science guy happens
by the set and offers to teach Ellen about energy. Walking off and disappearing into a blinding white light,
Ellen and Bill begin their energy adventure by venturing back billions of years into the past.
The eight-minute pre-show film is projected through the use of five 35mm motion picture projectors onto a
screen that measures 90 feet in length by 14 feet in height. The same projection equipment that was used
to project the original pre-show is still used today. During the rehab of the pavilion in 1996, all five
projection lamp housings were replaced along with the entire pre-show screen. The Radok kinetic mosaic
screen was demolished and replaced with five new stretch-frame screens.
On an interesting note, the sleeping cat on the armchair in the scene in Ellen's apartment actually had
to be Velcroed to the chair! It was reported that the animal handlers could not keep the cat from running
off of the set during filming, and it was eventually decided that Velcroing it to the chair would be the
best way to keep it "on its mark."
Composer Bruce Broughton, who also wrote the underscore for The Making of Me film at the Wonders of
Life pavilion and the Honey, I Shrunk the Audience film at the IMAGINATION! pavilion, composed the
underscore.
