Tom Sawyer Island Photos – Then and Now

Meet the World has a new post up of a photo essay of Tom Sawyers Island in 1974.  It’s pretty interesting to see how little has changed on the Island save the very significant growth of foliage.   I went back to some pictures I took last year on a visit to WDW, and decided to share them with you all.  You should really go back and catch the other article first to see how much the trees have grown!  Enjoy – you can click on the pictures to see a larger photo slideshow on Picasa.

    I am glad they’ve left this area untouched for the most part. It would be hard to make a princess out of Becky Thatcher and prince out of Tom Sawyer though. Nice photos!

    I noticed in your photo of the fort that the sign reads “Fort Lanhorn.” Has it always gone by that name? I called it Fort Wilderness in my post and someone corrected me saying it was Fort Sam Clemens. Did it ever go by that name? Tokyo Disneyland’s Fort is Fort Sam Clemens….I’m just wondering if the three of them have always had different names.

    Disneyland’s is Fort Wilderness…. now I seem to recall that WDW’s used to be called “Sam Clemens” – of course Sam Clemens’ middle name is Langhorn – so it’s still a Mark Twain reference.

    here are some answers for us in a nice l’il article about Disneyland’s Fort Wilderness (hate I missed that on my visit last year – looks like it’s closed for good). Looks like Fort Sam Clemens became Fort Langhorn in 1995 on the heels of a movie release… anyway – read on! http://www.yesterland.com/fortwilderness.html

    Thanks for the answers, Joe! Yeah, anything to boost video sales, huh? I grew up with Anaheim’s Fort Wilderness….I really wish they still had a fort that guests could enter.
