So, people have poured into Progress City today from the four corners of the web looking for information about Ramayana, the long, long rumored animated feature based on the Hindu epic which I’ve previously mentioned in passing.
Now while I’ve been trying to collect information on this project, which to all outwards appearances seems long dead, I really haven’t come up with much. The few pieces of concept art that circulate online were actually created for another project entirely.
So the question I ask you, dear reader, is what do you know about Ramayana? Is this little-known project just an echo of Eisner’s abandoned plans to infiltrate the Indian media market? Is it a relic of a more ambitious age, consigned to the dustbin with Fraidy Cat, My Peoples and Don Quixote? And what about Scarecrow’s brain? And what will be your fate?
good day!
will u b so kind to tell about that concept art rumored to be created 4 Ramayana? than for what project exactly it was if not for the Hindu epic?..
thanx)
A lot of the art out there that people think was for Ramayana was actually created as concept art for a version of The Emperor’s Nightingale that was in the works at Disney. I hope to have a story about that soon 🙂
After some exhaustive research, I have reached to a conclusion that versions of Ramayana exists in many languages, including Annamese, Balinese, Bengali, Cambodian, Chinese, Gujarati, Javanese, Kannada, Kashmiri, Khotanese, Laotian, Malaysian, Marathi, Oriya, Prakrit, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sinhalese, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Tibetan, etc. In Sanskrit itself there are 25 different versions. According to A. K. Ramanujam, more than 300 tellings of Ramayana exist.
Each has newer dimensions, more fascinating than the other.

Apparently, word from the Ultimate Disney boards is that a spanish site has claimed Ramayana and a 2D retool of King of the Elves are currently in the works
Hmm, now that’s interesting… thanks for the heads up!
