LOL that's the post of the day so far....

The first thought in my mind was that "Flynn Rider" did indeed sound like an... ahem... "stage" name. Ahem.

I guess it's offical now - 'Tangled' is the new title. And there's a new marketing angle as well. The focus will now be on the male character, named 'Flynn Rider' who just somehow manages to bump into a woman with 70 feet of hair. The makreting slug description of the film is "an action-packed, swashbuckling, animated musical comedy".

I wish RETLAW was still around. At least then we could take back Walt's name from these idiots.

Hehe thanks for pointing that out. Cross-Pacific translation never ceases to be amusing.

And Ally, I had to laugh at "Tangled is a title for a porn movie not for a fairy tale!"

For reference, in Japan, UP was in fact renamed to something that roughly translates to "Old Man Carl's House in the Sky." My English students were blown away when I pointed out the difference between the obscenely long and synopsis-like Japanese name and the real English name of the film.

I really hope Rapunzel title isn't the horrible Tangled... Tangled is a title for a porn movie not for a fairy tale!

Rapunzel title must to be Rapunzel! or if they want to change the title I hope they'll choose Hidden Tower or Secret Tower but not Tangled!!!

Today, at Disney they are very stupid... they delete Snow Queen and they change Rapunzel title into a porn title... I'm so disappointed... I think Lasseter, Rich Ross, Byron Howard, Nathan Greno, Glen Keane & company have disappointed me too much, so I hope Rich Ross, Lasseter and "Bolt" director and producer will go out of Disney very soon so they'll don't ruin another movies...

And TPATF isn't a flop... this movie is not a great succes but it isn't a flop...

There’s a deeper issue here – different parts of Disney are working at cross purposes at this point and it’s all about ‘The Disney Brand’.

One of the (many) reasons why Dick Cooke was fired as head of the studios was because he thought all movies should be released under the Disney brand name – from family flicks like ‘The Santa Claus’ to general releases like ‘Prince of Persia’ (save for the embarrassing stinking bombs like ‘Surrogates’ and ‘When In Rome’ which got slapped with the odd Touchstone Pictures fig leaf).

But if look at the rest of the company – they use the Disney brand to mean “you’ll like this if you’re not old enough for a training bra”. Look at “The Disney Channel”, all of the additions to the Parks, brand pre-packaged apple slices at your grocery store, etc. “Disney” is a kiddie brand. Meanwhile, Iger has been using/buying up other brands for other markets – Marvel for boys, Lifetime is for women, ESPN is for men, ABC for the sad and pathetic without cable, etc.

No one in Corporate minded that ‘PatF’ scarred away adult couples, Pixar is for that crowd. What really tiffed off the suits was that the Princess Pack didn’t show up in ‘Twilight’-sized crowds for the movie. The only reason ‘Frog’ exists is to bolster the Princess product line, not be make ‘Avatar’ like box office. The rub is the frog didn’t even deliver on that level.

Meanwhile, all the orcs over in the Hat building haven’t been reading their memos. They think “Disney” is still for general audiences and they somehow still want to get general audience box office. Instead of cluing in that ‘Tinker belle’ and ‘Winnie the Pooh’ is the future of Disney Feature Animation, they still are thinking of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Lion King’. Instead of toeing Iger’s simplistic and naïve brand strategy, the animation ocrs are still trying for a broad audience box office smash.

Silly games like ‘The Thief and the Hidden Tower’ are what clueless suits do on their lunch hour. Just asked anyone how well that worked out for ‘Basil of Baker Street’. They are so desperate for a hit (i.e., whatever will save their jobs this week) that they’re resorting to stuff like this and not facing the REAL problem. ‘Rapunzel’ is just an old product stuck in the production line that’s too far along to cancel, but not important enough in the new scheme of things to market. ‘The Snow Queen’ wasn’t so far along and therefore wasn’t so lucky. Their fate wasn’t the result of the box office from ‘Frog’ nor will a smash hit ‘Tower’ mean another $300 million feature is in the future.

The good folks at Disney Feature Animation had better get used to the fact that they are making movies for an audience that can’t legally drive themselves to the theater.
